Cricket Mania

This week saw the young Indian cricket team winning the Twenty20 world cup making all Indians proud all over the world.
But, what followed in the name of celebration was nothing less than a mania.

The whole nation went hysterical, or so it seemed. BCCI and other organizations challenged "Karna" (of the Mahabharatha fame) in a rare display of selfless giving - announcing awards and cash prizes one after the other to the players and staff. So far, I was quite happy.

Then comes in the governments. The state governments started competing with each other in giving away huge cash prizes to the players and coaches.

Now, this is where I start hating the whole thing.

How can government give cash awards, and that too, substantially high amounts to these players? Where does this money come from? From us, the tax payers?

Is this even legal? Can the government just sqander away the tax payers' hard earned money like this?

Can cricket cure hunger and diseases, stop floods and droughts, build roads and bridges? Isn't that what the money is supposed to be used for?

Beats me!!!

As a tax payer i find absolutely nothing wrong with the goverments decision to rain in money on the cricketers.

As far as the legality issue is concerned ,Yes it is very much legal as we the people elected these governments. And the government of the day decides how the cash must be spent.

Just think of it in a real sense about what the game of cricket means to an Indian and probably every thing will make sense to you.

May be for you its just a game that the players have won by their dedicated efforts. However this thought process of yours is clearly one-dimensional.

Cricket is more than a religion. The players are worshipped when they do well and their houses are pelted at when they perfom badly.

To put it in other terms to you, they are subjected to the extremes.

No body can change this extreme attitude of our people towards cricketres.

I dont blame this attitude of our people as they are very passionate about the game.

What this passion has done to our country is some thing which politicians and social reformers could not achieve despite their efforts for decades.

And you know what !!!!! the game has united Indians!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
It has cut accross the boundaries of religion and caste.A brahmin and a dalit will sit on adjacent chairs watching a cricket match ,shout with joy and hug each other when the team wins and become desperate equally when they lose. Dont you find this phenomenon amazing!!!

Just walk by the streets of your town and ask a kid what he feels about cricket. He will come up with an opinion about some player. To say it plainly any tom ,dick and harry here has an opinion on cricket.

Tell me any political agenda , activity or an issue where people are so much involved?

I want you to know that a cricketer is subjected to pressure which no other sports people(be it hockey, chess or olympics)are. You wont find a hockey players house being destroyed if he dosent perfom well would you?

Man ---just think of it. A a cricketer eats sleeps and drinks pressure. An MBA from IIM can learn what pressure is from a cricketer.

Just have a little gratitude for these guys and the game and dont crib about the money part.
